A new youth company that will offer free training to emerging performers is being launched in Scotland, which seeks to increase access for disadvantaged young people. The programme, called the Attic Collective, will run as a repertory theatre company and has been set up by the Festival City Theatres Trust, which runs both the King’s and Festival Theatres in Edinburgh. Aimed at young people aged between 16 and 25, the Attic Collective will offer free industry-led training for 20 performers over the course of a year. Alongside workshops with companies that visit the Festival and King's Theatres, the ensemble will produce three shows on the venues' main stages, performing a contemporary, classical and musical production during the year. Festival City Theatres Trust chief executive Duncan Hendry said the company’s creation was an opportunity to open up theatre training to a wider selection of emerging talent. "Much has been said about the current challenges young people from disadvantaged and diverse backgrounds face trying to access the theatre industry. We hope the opportunities and training offered by the Attic Collective will begin to make an impact on this challenge within Scotland,” he said. The company's first show will be the world premiere of a new play by Jo Clifford, War in America, which will run at the King's Theatre in January 2017. The ensemble will be led by director and voice coach Susan Worsfold, who labelled the initiative a landmark venture. "To support young artists in the initial stages of their careers and to do so on such prestigious stages is hugely exciting. I cannot wait to collaborate with Scotland's emerging theatre talent to create locally sourced, internationally relevant work and I look forward to welcoming artists and audiences alike to our new community," she added. The first round of auditions for the company will take place at the King's Theatre between September 15 and 17, while free audition workshops will take place during the summer for those looking to apply.
